Job Description



Working under general supervision, the Merchant develops and manages action plans and the integration of support groups to execute GameStop’s category strategies and processes in relation to vendor management, integrated promotional planning, assortment management, price management, and business performance. The Merchant will assist the business team leader in implementing the company vision and category objectives through execution of GameStop’s retail processes. The Merchant manages daily tasks to accomplish the business and financial goals set forth. The Merchant would assist in budget development and drives toward the financial goals within a given category.  Associate will interact with his or her supervisor as needed by either.  Most activities are completed without a supervisor’s advance approval. 


• Executes the Assortment Management process

• Develops/creates POG (vision of floor)to ensure a great shopping experience

• Responsible for ensuring timelines are adhered to and all communication is given to the appropriate parties (i.e. Inventory   Allocation, Inventory Control, Space Planning, Marketing, E-Commerce, Etc.)

• Executes SKU exit plans and negotiates EOL funding

• Responsible for SKU in/out and margin/pricing input and decision making

• Ensure good, better, best is planned where applicable; breadth of vendors is covered, and includes the competitive landscape (evaluating assortment by store/market/division for maximizing product in different assortment groups)

• Ensure margins/retails are in-line to achieve financial expectations

• Must understand implications of assortment decisions and react throughout product life cycle

• Ensure all channels have the appropriate assortment

• Manages open to buy/ maintain margin targets/ adhere to and maintain Company Inventory    levels/meet GMROI metrics for department and individual metrics/ meet company sales objectives

• Supports the marketing team in ensuring all promotional materials are proofed appropriately

• Executes the promotional rotation and sub SKUs guidelines

• Negotiates promotional offers (in some areas provides support to the Senior Merchant)

• Partners with vendors and channel teams to drive out channel-specific promotions and offers

• Drives the category business plans to achieve financial metrics

• Monitors market share

• Suggests and implements plans to drive the category appropriately

• Provides input into category pricing strategies and is responsible for execution of the strategy

• Negotiates pricing, timing, and necessary market development funds and sell through credits, etc.

• Executes monthly price changes within budgets and throughout all channels

• Responsible for the vendor funding & CO-OP process

• Manages the vendor relationship with prompt, courteous and professional communication; fact-based information sharing, etc.

• Responsible for forecasting all financial metrics for a category, class or subclass

• Category recaps (weekly and monthly)

• Budgeting (annually)

• Contributes to weekly merchandising meetings (prep work and communicating results and action plans)

• Collaborates with Inventory team and gain alignment on forecasts with accuracy as the goal

• Responsible for vendor support forecasting (may be a shared responsibility with Senior Merchant)

• Shares out best practices with peers

• Supports the marketing teams development and work prioritization

• Creates strong cross-functional partnerships to drive results

• Act as strategic sales and operational SME for short and mid-term category projects, strategies, or initiatives.

• Partner with category teams, marketing, operations, re-commerce, IT, finance, demand planning, vendors and other internal and external partners to ensure holistic category plans are developed and executed

• Engage with retail and corporate partners to ensure strategies and information are developed with a retail operational lens

• Ensure business, retail, and vendor strategies are aligned in support of the employee and customer experience

• Act as sales and operational SME and represent retail feedback throughout decision making process

• Act as sales and operational gatekeeper for all business category needs

• Accountable to providing swift responses and issue resolution in all retail support and communications vehicles for category responsibilities

• Accountable for providing guidance, answers, and support to retail stores and multi-unit leaders for all areas of responsibility.

• Responsible for after hours on-call support as needed or process dictates


• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, merchandising, or related field from an accredited program required; additional education in retail merchandising, buying, marketing, and business analytics preferred

• 5-7 years of retail buying experience required; closely related work experience may be used as a substitute

• Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word; Expert knowledge and experience in Excel writing formulas and creating flexible, detailed, accurate spreadsheets

• Proficient knowledge of video gaming platforms and hot titles

• Ability to recognize discrepancies/errors in written/recorded data/information including the ability to initiate and respond to work errors in a professional manner, working collaboratively and cooperatively with others
