SUMMARY

The Senior Release Train Engineer (RTE) ensures the successful delivery of large-scale IT programs and coaches complex Agile Release Trains (ART). An autonomous leader for a matrix of teams that identify needs, remove impediments and leans in as necessary to ensure the performance and success of the teams and initiatives. The Sr. RTE enables value delivery in accordance with the roadmap set by Product and Portfolio Management.   This role communicates with stakeholders including senior executives and ensures the appropriate visibility of issues and risks.  As a coach, this role is an advocate for IT agile practices and is responsible for relentless improvements.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Manage and optimize the flow of work through the ART while fostering team accountability
  • Lead execution of the ART by closely partnering with the delivery management, Product Management, Scrum masters and Architect team
  • Possess the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization including Senior Management in both IT and Business
  • Establish program level cadence and drive program level ceremonies ensuring the appropriate level of program governance to achieve commitments (e.g. PI Planning, PI Demo, Scrum of Scrums, release train retrospectives etc.)
  • Ensure coordination of program execution through defining cross-team dependencies ensuring a well-defined program schedule that meets organizational objectives
  • Summarize team objectives into Program PI Objectives and publish them for visibility and transparency
  • Work with other program leaders to drive the definition and refinement of the program backlog
  • Provide leadership, direction, and coaching to scrum teams and Scrum Masters
  • Ensure cross-value stream and cross-program coordination and collaboration
  • Assist with execution and management of program scope including Feature/Capability completion tracking
  • Facilitate System Demos and ensure constant communication and visibility of execution to stakeholders and leadership ensuring quality of delivery
  • Report status to Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) and support related activities
  • Understand and operate within lean budgets including defining budget, managing to budget, facilitation of funding, forecasting budgets and driving organizational resolution of budget challenges
  • Facilitate the cross-functional delivery into production ensuring dependency coordination, implementation planning, and release/change management
  • Ensures that all programs are implemented to be secure, resilient, and private by design
  • Drive relentless improvement via Inspect & Adapt workshops; assess the agility level of the ART and help them improve
  • Facilitate the continued adoption, delivery improvement and maturation of Agile practices
  • Assist other RTEs in planning the PI event

BASIC AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE)

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience required
  • 10+ years of experience leading Information Technology projects
  • 7+ years leading large scale transformation programs, involving business process and change, organization change, and multiple large-scale technology components
  • 5+ years of Scrum Master or project management experience
  • 2+ years delivering large scale IT solutions leveraging Agile or Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Certified SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE) / Certified Scrum Master (CSM) / SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) / SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification preferred but not required
  • Experience in business and solution development, project/program management, and project delivery
  • Ability to interact effectively with various levels within the organization
  • Proven experience in change management
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, JOB SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Very strong understanding of the system development life cycle
  • Proficient knowledge of continuous integration methodologies, automation, and high frequency deployments
  • Demonstrated ability with complex environments where more than one release done in parallel, along with ongoing support
  • Ability to meet or exceed expectations in an environment with rapidly evolving, occasionally overlapping priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate organizational dynamics of a large organization
  • Ability to manage potentially complex matrixed reporting relationships
