SUMMARY

Working independently, the Senior Merchant supervises two or more Merchants to support one or more product categories for a designated vendor. He or she works closely with Merchandise Directors to lead the development of product assortments, perform consumer trends analyses, manage margins, conduct contract negotiations, track inventory and orders, and collaborate with members of the Marketing and Ecommerce teams regularly. The principal business outcome for this position is profitable sales through product assortment, product availability, and competitive pricing.  The Senior Merchant interacts as needed with Merchandise Directors. Many activities may be performed without a supervisor’s advance approval.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Develop, manage, and execute strategic plans for SW/ Accessory/ and DLC purchases.
  • Manage high volume VG/ SW/ Accessory accounts and purchase responsibilities (E/A, Activision, Take2, PDP, Sony- Microsoft DLC and others).
  • Manage purchases and CO-OP collection daily and attain yearly goals established by senior department leaders.
  • Select, direct, develop, and correct team members. Coach and mentor Merchants and provide ongoing performance feedback. Provide guidance, set priorities, and assist direct reports with assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with Merchants, Merchandise Directors, other senior department leaders, vendor representatives and mid- to senior-level leaders in the Marketing and Operations departments.
  • Coordinate schedules and activities for Merchants.
  • Conduct routine training for Merchants as needed to support their sustainable success.
  • Set and communicate relevant and challenging objectives to build direct reports’ capability and overall success; measure and reward success.
  • Resolve merchandising issues and balance inventories in the area of responsibility by collecting, organizing, interpreting, and reporting financial data to support sound decision making activities; escalate issues as needed.
  • Manage open-to-buy, maintain margin targets, adhere to and maintain company inventory levels, meet department and individual GMROI metrics to help achieve overall sales and margin objectives.
  • Address issues in a timely manner, which is generally interpreted to mean responding personally, or through direct reports, to voice mails and emails within 24 hours of receipt.
  • Ensure that all vendor relationships and transactions conform to GameStop’s standards of conduct and ethical requirements.

BASIC AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE)

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, merchandising, or related field from an accredited program required; additional education in retail merchandising, buying, marketing, and business analytics preferred.
  • At least 5-7 years of retail buying experience required; closely related work experience may be used as a substitute.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours as needed to respond to urgent needs and business opportunities.

  • Proficient written/verbal communication and presentation skills using spoken English — bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
